This International Cat Day, St. Clair O’Connor Community (SCOC) is highlighting two special residents: Patches and Freckles, a bonded mother-daughter cat duo adopted earlier this year to enrich life in the long-term care home.
The idea to bring the cats into the community stemmed from a desire to create a more home-like atmosphere for residents.
“We know that animals can help reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety, and we wanted to give our residents something joyful and nurturing to engage with each day,” said Rebecca Freeman, SCOC’s Director of Programs and Community Development.
“We wanted to reintroduce that sense of companionship and warmth,” she said.

During her search, Freeman was looking for one senior cat and reached out to several shelters. However, after connecting with Toronto Animal Services, she was placed on a waitlist and contacted about Patches and Freckles.
While not part of a formal therapy program, Patches and Freckles often visit residents during recreation programming or while walking through the halls.
“Bringing Patches and Freckles into our long-term care home reflects SCOC’s deep commitment to creating a safe, caring and welcoming environment where residents can age gracefully and feel truly at home,” said Freeman. “They’re more than pets, they’re members of our care team in their own way,”
Freeman notes that residents who aren’t fond of the cats tend to keep their distance, and SCOC ensures everyone feels comfortable in shared spaces.
